How Do Frigatebird Communicate

These magnificent birds communicate by cawing, but only when it is absolutely necessary. Frigate birds try not to speak too loudly and spend most of their lives in silence.

Frigatebird Nests

These wonderful birds breed on distant islands and during breeding, these birds live in groups. The number of groups of these birds has been seen between 10 or 30 or sometimes around 100. Frigate birds do not have any breeding season, they breed anytime in the year.

These birds pair in the form of marriage, that is, they live with the same partner throughout their life. When the male bird of these birds needs a partner, he starts living in a colony of birds. Apart from this, the male bird inflates a bright red pouch under the neck to attract the female bird.

It takes about 20 minutes to inflate the bright red pouch under the neck and when the female bird likes the male bird, the female bird flies to the male bird. Frigate birds like to build their nests on bushes or trees and sometimes these birds also make nests on the ground when they do not find bushes or trees.

This bird builds its nest about 1 foot (0.3 m) wide which takes about 13 days. The female bird lays one or two white eggs, after which the male and female birds take care of them for an incubation period of 41 to 55 days. When the chicks of these birds come out of the egg, they do not have feathers.

In these birds, the female bird is responsible for keeping an eye on the chick for four to six weeks, but both the male and female birds together feed the chick for the first three months. After this, the male bird leaves the colony and the female has to continue taking care of the chick on her own.

The chicks of these birds stay in their nests for the first five or six months of their lives. These birds can take 9 to 12 months to raise their chick and the chicks take their first flight between the ages of 20 and 24 weeks.
