Where Are Crowned Eagles Found

Crowned Eagle, this predatory bird can be seen living in different parts of Africa such as the sub-Saharan region, parts of central Ethiopia and the forests of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa. But the number of Crowned Eagles has decreased significantly in the areas of West Africa.  This eagle is also known as the African Crowned Eagle or Crowned Hawk-Eagle.

This eagle is found in the eastern regions of Southern Africa. The preferred habitat of the Crowned Eagle mainly includes riparian woodlands and various types of forests. The Crowned Eagle is the only extant bird of the genus Stephanoaetus. Apart from this, there is another species named Malagasy Crowned Eagle which became extinct due to human settlement on Madagascar.

The scientific name of the Crowned Eagle is Stephanoaetus coronatus and this eagle is also identified as the African Crowned Eagle. Apart from this, it is a bird belonging to the Aves class. The Crowned Eagle is a large and powerful hunting bird originally living in parts of Africa. It is believed that this eagle has evolved from the Malagasy Crowned Eagle.

How Do Crowned Eagles Look Like

The Crowned Eagle is a species of eagle and these birds have large and strong legs. Long claws are present on each toe of the Crowned Eagle which has a set of claws like weapons to catch prey. Crowned eagles are capable of killing animals weighing seven times more than their size. The Crowned Eagle is between 5-5.9 feet tall.

But the wingspan of the crowned eagle is longer than the width as they have rounded wings. In appearance, the upper parts of the crowned eagle are brown and black in color. The tail of the crowned eagle is mostly 30-41 cm long and the tail has a mixture of black and brown colors.

The throat of the crowned eagle is brown while the color of the belly and breast is black and small spots of white are found. The flight feathers of the crowned eagle are white and their eyes can range from yellow to almost white.

The crowned eagle is a carnivore and consumes only meat in its diet. The main diet of the crowned eagle consists of forest animals such as monitor lizards, snakes, rabbits, squirrels, mongooses, wild cats, hyraxes and even small antelopes. The crowned eagle mostly prefers to hunt near its habitat.

Apart from animals, the crowned eagle has been proven to be dangerous on the basis of attacking human infants as well. According to a National Geographic report, children living near the habitat of the crowned eagle have been reported to be attacked occasionally. Size and weight of the crowned eagle

The length of the crowned eagle is about 31-39 inches, making this eagle one of the fifth longest eagle species in the world.  The claws of the crowned eagle's feet are so strong that in one blow it can crush any animal up to seven times its weight.

How Crowned Eagles Communicate

Crowned Eagle Nests

Crowned eagles are monogamous and stay with the same partner for life. The male and female breed once every two years but egg laying takes place from July to November. Then the pair of these birds starts building a huge nest in the fork of a tree in a large forest which is 12-45 meters above the ground. The female crowned eagle brings more nesting material.

The male crowned eagle is more active in nest building. The female crowned eagle lays 1 or 2 white colored eggs in the nest. The incubation period lasts for about 49 days which is mainly done by the female eagle. The male eagle brings food for the incubating female bird every 3 to 5 days.

After about 40 days of age, the babies are able to eat on their own but are still fed by the parents. The babies grow up in 90 to 115 days but for the next 11 months, the babies remain under the care of their parents.  Crowned eagles are believed to be ready to breed at around 5 years of age.

How Many Crowned Eagles Are There In The World

According to current estimates, the number of crowned eagles is believed to be around 10,000 birds. Apart from this, the crowned eagle is considered an endangered bird species and conservation efforts for these birds have been started in Africa. According to the IUCN Red List, the crowned eagle is classified under the endangered bird species category.

Therefore, it is believed that the crowned eagle may be at risk of extinction for the foreseeable future. The main threat to the crowned eagle is the loss of their habitat.
