Butterflies are also the only group of insects whose wings are covered with scales and the biggest feature of butterflies is their ability to fold their proboscis. It is also said that the word butterfly comes from the Old English word Butterflios which actually means butterfly in modern English.

A very interesting theory behind this unique name is that in ancient times witches resembling butterflies in shape used to steal milk and butter so they got the name butterfly. A large number of species and different varieties of butterflies are found in most parts of the world.

Some scientists believe that butterflies originated from the Cretaceous period, also known as the age of flowering plants. This period occurred about 65 million to 135 million years ago and was the time when dinosaurs were present around the earth.

The Karner Blue Butterfly is a small and delicate butterfly that is considered an endangered subspecies of the small blue butterfly. At one time, Karner Blue butterflies were found in very high numbers on the northern edge of the blue lupine range which was found from southern Maine to eastern Minnesota.
